CCTV appeal after £20k damage caused in arson attack on Abbey Church in Shrewsbury

A CCTV image of a person has been released by police after £20,000 worth of damage was caused to a church. The building was the site of an arson attack, cops have said.

And police have shared an image of a person who may have information regarding the investigation. It comes after a fire at Abbey Church in Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury.

The blaze was set between 4am and 5am on December 16. At the time, a person was seen entering the toilet at the site.


Anyone with information regarding the incident has been asked to contact West Mercia Police immediately. A spokesperson for the force said: "Officers investigating an arson in Shrewsbury and are asking for the public's help in identifying this person.

"It is believed the person in the image may be able to help officers with their enquiries. The arson happened at the Abbey Church, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury in the early hours of 16 December between 4am and 5am.

"During the time of the offence an unknown person is seen in the grounds of the church entering a portable toilet. CCTV images show the person leaving the toilet, after which the fire has started."

They continued: "The fire caused over £20,000 of damage to the Abbey Church and the toilet. Anyone with information that may help can email this to jono.lightfoot@westmercia.police.uk.
